You will probably have already realised that Zendeacott is a simple mash-up of two words, two personally significant names, Zen and Endeacott. That may seem whimsical of me and a weak attempt at being cool and witty but there is actually an ‘origins’ chapter in this new story of mine.
In the winter of 2021, I was fortunate enough to meet with one of my heroes, Marcelo Bielsa, a few times over in Oslo, Norway. Forget your football rivalries, Bielsa transcends such piffling matters, his public persona in the sport is very different to that of real life. Away from football, he is the epitome of wisdom, understanding and compassion, in my relatively humble opinion. No doubt he has his faults, in football management at least and I am pretty sure he would be the first to recognise them, but when it comes down to being able to see things clearly, and caring, he is up there with the best of them. He is cool and he cares about the important things in life. For me, he is a great example of Zen-ness.
Being Zen, to me at least, is being calm, relaxed, philosophical, attentive, caring, along with the ability to demonstrate grace at all times, especially when under pressure. These are all qualities I aspire to. Perhaps I am aiming too high but I will keep trying. Regardless, this is how Zendeacott was born, starting as a chapter in the book Marcelo On Together co-authored with Ian Thornton, one of the most Zen people I am lucky enough to know. Here, on this website you are looking at, Zendeacott is my Art name, a brand even, which I want to somehow do good with, to appeal and to entertain. I truly hope you like it, or at least appreciate what I’m trying to say and do.

Because I just knew that it couldn’t be a new invention, I investigated the word ‘swircles’ before adopting it for my own use. It turns out that it is an old knitting term, used in Europe, particularly France. That’s no surprise, the French always loved revolutions! Sorry, rubbish joke. Anyway, it’s a great word and felt perfect for my new painting venture.
A significant part of my work is mixing paint so as to arrive at the correct/appropriate tone and shade for whatever subject I’m working on. For as long as I remember, the actual physical process of mixing colours has been a visual treat and it opened up a new world for me. Or was I just being a bit silly and over-enthusiastic? I will leave viewers to answer that. All I know is that when I mix paint, in circular pots or palette wells, I am always captivated by the sumptuous colours and unique swirls generated in those little circles. And that, folks, is how my Swircles began, I set out to re-create them as well as I can, on round canvases.
